If you want clumpish, muddy tank tracks, here is a tip you can use:

Mix baking soda into your acrylic paint. It forms a nice clumpish sort of mixture that you can dab in tank tracks and it looks just like dried caked on mud.

Armored vehicles will catch mud and earth in the tracks, drive wheels and cogs. Add clumps of your mud substitute, allow it to dry and then paint it brown or reddish brown. And don't forget, if it's muddy enough to collect on wheels or tracks then there will be mud splashes on the model as well.

You will find it looks even better when you mix in some small horse hair clippings to simulate grass ground up in the mud.
