what is the best way to do the rigging on ships so that it stays in place as you are running it between masts

SMH Responds model ship rigging has been responsible for some of my most traumatic moments, so I may not be the best person to consult. I've had my best luck with standing rigging by running it over a cube of wax and then heating it to the point of melting and rubbing it into the line to stiffen.

For gluing I prefer lightly diluted white glue applied with a syringe.
